PepsiCo UK Promises to Go Fossil Fuel Free

One hundred percent renewable energy, zero landfill waste, renewable packaging, a low-emissions fleet, less water use—it's an ambitious goal.

The British branch of PepsiCo, the umbrella corporation that makes Tropicana, Quaker Oats, and a veritable universe of chips and soda, has promised to achieve a "zero impact" operation by 2023. Ambitious!

The big component of this push is shifting to 100 percent renewable energy for all of its manufacturing and distribution. There are other pieces too, though. They're shooting for zero landfill waste; packaging that is entirely renewable, recyclable, or compostable; zero water intake at their "main manufacturing sites."

Are there more comprehensive ways of calculating a company's impact than the one Pepsi is applying to itself? Probably. Will this initiative save Pepsi money in a world of rising energy prices? Probably. Is soda unhealthy? Of course, but so are lots of delicious things. You can certainly cast this as greenwashing or corporate selfishness if you want. But before you do, check out the detailed PDF they've released to chart their progress. I'm not sure cynicism is the most helpful stance on this one.

In the interests of full disclosure I should say that GOOD has done a lot of business with Pepsi. But the story comes via Inhabitat.
