Pickens's Plans for World's Largest Wind Farm Off the Table

T. Boone Pickens, the much lauded oil man now dabbling in alternative energy, is cutting back one of his most ambitious propositions: the world's largest wind farm in the Texas Panhandle, which was going to generate four times the power of a nuclear power plant. Due to transmission problems-i.e. the Texas Panhandle is very far away from a major population center, and energy gets lost as it is transmitted-Pickens is now going to build several smaller wind farms throughout the Midwest, though none will become "the world's largest wind farm."This is probably the best idea for society, as we're most likely not going to solve our problems by putting a massive wind farm in the middle of nowhere, no matter how good "the world's largest wind farm" sounds. We need smaller, more local solutions. Building a bunch of smaller wind farms is the way to go. We're all going to have to get used to the idea of seeing wind turbines on the horizon. Luckily, this is not a problem, because wind farms look really cool.
