Private Equity Firm “Buys” Rainforest, Confuses Everyone

  • Posted by: Andrew Price

A London investment house, Canopy Capital, has paid an undisclosed sum for the rights to the “services” of a million acres of untouched rainforest.

It looks like they want to somehow make money from “the proven ability of rainforests to generate rainfall, cool the atmosphere, store carbon, moderate weather conditions and sustain biodiversity.”

We’re intrigued, but how exactly they’re turning the rainforest’s “services” into profits is unclear. TreeHugger’s perplexed too.

The director of Canopy Capital confuses things further with this cryptic question: “How can it be that Google’s services are worth billions but those from all the world’s rainforests amount to nothing?”

Is he going to cover the rainforest in contextual ads?
