Project: Create an Infographic About New Orleans

As you may have heard, we're making a magazine about New Orleans. For you designers out there, this is a chance to participate, online and in print. We want you to make an infographic about New Orleans.

the OBJECTIVE
Create an infographic that illuminates some aspect of New Orleans and why it and its recovery are important.

the ASSIGNMENT
The infographic can be on a wide range of subjects. You should definitely read our brainstorm on the issue to see where we are coming from in choosing the topic, but this infographic can illustrate any interesting part of the city, its culture, or the people in it.

the REQUIREMENTS
Send us an e-mail at projects[at]goodinc[dot]com with your infographic, or post it to GOOD's Community Blog with the tag "May 2010 Transparency Contest." It can be in any image format, but it should be high enough resolution that it can be printed at 300 dpi. Make sure to include your sources, and a brief (one- or two-sentence) introduction to your concept. We’ll take submissions now through May 25. As with our last contest, we'll be giving out three awards: best use and presentation of information, best aesthetics, and best overall infographic. The winning entries will be announced on June 8, featured on our homepage, and printed in the next issue of GOOD. We’ll send a GOOD T-shirt and a free subscription (or gift subscription) to the winner.

RESEARCH and INSPIRATION

Here is the basic Census data for the city. The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center also has a wealth of resources to help get you started. The Brookings Institute also has a great page aggregating data and reports on the city. Here is a City of New Orleans page with data about the city and the recovery. Feel free to supplement this with any data you find yourself. And please, help each other. No one will get extra credit for using special data, so if you find something cool or helpful, please post it in the comments.
