I know this film has been kicking around for a while, but last night I had the great fortune of catching Stacey Peralta and Baron Davis' Bloods & Crips: Made in America on PBS. The film is refreshingly short on "thug life" and heavy on the social and economic history (i.e. racism) that gave rise to, and continues to fuel, a gang war that has claimed 15,000 lives. Stacey Peralta's pitch goes like this: "...imagine if white, middle class American teenagers were forming
gangs and arming themselves with automatic assault rifles and killing
themselves on a consistent basis. What do you think the response of our
government would be and what do you think the response of our society
would be?"
