00:00/00:0000:00Directed by Canadian Brett Gaylor, the 2008 documentary RiP! A Remix Manifesto aims to explore the the "changing concept of copyright." The documentary focuses on the legal gray area of remixing existing works under a provision of copyright called fair use, which allows for journalistic, parody, and other critical uses. The topic of fair use is important, because media conglomerates such as Disney and Warner-Brothers hold extended copyrights on universal icons such as Mickey Mouse.There are a number of appearances by individuals at the intersection of copyright and art including remix musician Gregg Gillis a.k.a. Girl Talk, copyright lawyer and activist Lawrence Lessig, blogger Cory Doctorow, and others.
The film is available for download at the film's web site on a Radiohead-esque price scale-pay what you want or nothing at all. An open source documentary, remixing of the work itself is encouraged.
