In Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure, editors of storytelling magazine Smith have compiled the condensed life-stories of a wide array of captivating wordsmiths, including Richard Ford, Stephen Colbert, Jonathan Lethem, Chuck Klosterman, Amy Sedaris, and countless others you’ve never heard of.

The collective memoir, published by Harper Perennial, hit shelves last week.
