Starbucks and McDonalds go head to head in a recent Pew Social and Demographic Trends survey which asks the question, "Would you prefer to live in a place with more McDonald's or more Starbucks?". The results are both predictable and surprising: McDonalds won 43% to Starbucks 35% (and Catholics love McDonalds). Apparently there are real "latte-drinking liberals". Self-reported Liberals prefer Starbucks to McDonalds 46% to 33% (Conservatives prefer McDonalds 50%-28%).
What's even more interesting is how the preferences break down along education levels (college grads prefer Starbucks), income (those making over 75,000 vote Starbucks), and religion (the non-religious feel more at home in a Starbucks). Does this mean college educated people are more likely to suffer from hypertension and religious people from heart disease? Our daily habits, it seems, are more than just impulse purchases.
