Taming Volcanoes For Energy

Icelanders have always seemed to us to have an especially close relationship with the natural environment. See Sigur Ros’ concert documentary or the novel Independent People by Nobel Laureate Halldór Laxness.

So it’s only fitting that Iceland is leading the charge in geothermal energy, taming the country’s volcanoes for the free heat and steam they can offer. Eruptions and steam explosions are ever-present risks. It’s renewable energy, frought with drama and danger, as this NPR story makes clear.
