Each issue, GOOD asks an artist or group to set the tone with a visual interpretation of the theme. Here’s Noah Webb’s contribution for the Transportation Issue. The selected images from his series “Teleport” capture a sense of stillness within moving structures. Visit noahwebb.com for more info.

The Teleport stillness series reminds me of a twentieth century artist named Edward Hopper who did a lot of stillness, solitude type art. He does a remarkable job of capturing the spirit of the common man as do these pictures in the Teleport series. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to get some solitude in the areas that are being portrayed in the Teleport series? Most of the pictures usually have crowds of people except for the lady driving the car alone. It’s too bad that one cannot have solitude in places like the subway, which is shown in one of the photographs without being mugged. The pictures must be a reminiscing of better times long ago or of a wishing of better times ahead. The best time of contemplation of the soul comes when one is alone with one’s own thoughts. My best revelations and answers to problems have come when I’ve had one quiet moment by myself for an hour. Wouldn’t it be nice to carry that spirit of solitude everywhere like these photos are there to portray and shoot for that goal?
I like the first photo of the woman waiting at the bus stop. I like that they are all moving, yet all waiting at the same time to get to their destinations.
