This week's 12th Annual HOPES conference showcases some amazing architecture with an eye toward sustainability. HOPES, short for Holistic Opportunities for Planet Earth Sustainability, is featuring the work of Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Instead of steel and concrete, Ban uses paper tubes as his main building structure. He initially used the tubes because steel was too expensive, but other benefits of the alternative material became apparent. The tubes can be produced from recycled material, and when they are dismantled they can be recycled again. By varying the length and thickness of the tubes, Ban has created some impressive load-bearing structures. His latest work is The Nomadic Museum at the fantastic Ashes and Snow photo exhibit in Santa Monica, CA.

Here are some great photos of his previous designs.
