Infographic: Is Anybody Reading Your Tweets?

A new phone survey about Twitter usage finds who the users really are, and how they are really using the site.

You've just spent the morning crafting an excessively witty tweet that all your followers are going to love and enjoy. Or not. A new study from Pew found that despite its high user numbers, very few people are actually using Twitter, and even fewer are actually reading what other people tweet. Who is using the service?

Some of the groups who are notable for their relatively high levels of Twitter use include:


  • Young adults: Internet users ages 18-29 are significantly more likely to use Twitter than are older adults.
  • African-Americans and Latinos: Minority internet users are more than twice as likely to use Twitter as are white internet users.
  • Urbanites: Urban residents are roughly twice as likely to use Twitter as rural dwellers.

More importantly for all our Twittering egos, nearly 50 percent of surveyed Twitter users check Twitter for other material every few weeks or less:
