Wind Turbines Take To The Skies

This new turbine design, by a company called Magenn Power, uses a blimp-like, floating windwheel to harvest wind power where there’s lots of wind—at high altitudes. It just floats in the air like a kite, so it’s really mobile compared to standard windmills (which aren’t mobile at all). It could be floated over the sea, or near power grids, or maybe even over a private residence as a direct power supply for your lights or your Aptera. It’s in the “prototype stage” now, but it gets us excited because innovations like this—that don’t require a big infrastructure overhaul—can start to take hold at the margins as soon as they hit the market.
