Your Primer On Burma

  • Posted by: Andrew Price

We’ve blogged about the protests in Burma here and here, but realize that some readers may want a little more context.

Here’s a quick-and-dirty explanation of the Burma vs. Myanmar debate. What to call the country is a politically charged question.

Check out this run-down of where various international parties stand on the situation.

China says: “China hopes that all parties in Myanmar exercise restraint and properly handle the current issue so as to ensure the situation there does not escalate and get complicated…”

The European Union says: “China is the puppet-master of Burma.”

And here’s a list of blogs out of Burma. The government’s trying to keep everyone in the dark and traditional journalists are having a hard time. This is the internet at its best.
