America tries to bring democracy to the world, because democracy makes people's lives better. But how much do we, a country where nearly half the population doesn't vote, really know about democracy? Last year an Economist Intelligence Unit study ranked the strongest democracies in the world. They judged each country on a range of criteria, from electoral process to civil liberties. The top 28, or "full" democracies, (the US is number 17) all feature vastly different forms of democratic government and varying degrees of political participation. How do they compare?
