Need a better way to measure how your garden is doing? More and more people are connecting their organic projects with the efficient touch of circuit boards. Steve Spence, an amateur organic farmer in South Carolina, explained to modernfarmer.com how he resolved feeding pond water to his vegetables, which must be carefully balanced for ammonia levels, by building his own sensor to read the contents of the water. If he had bought standalone sensors, he would have spent a great deal more for sensors to perform one or two jobs—instead of the multiple tasks processed by his DIY board. Small and flexible, Adruino and Raspberry Pi circuit boards allow growers to monitor temperature in grow boxes, log temperature readings, or even send updates through text or Twitter.
The software for each board is open source, which means it'll be easy to find support or alter what your sensor does, and most code for what you aim to do is a simple copy and paste job of someone else's work online.
