Bloomberg's response to the Newtown shootings: Demand a Plan

More than 800 mayors and 800,000 grassroots supporters demand President Obama and Congress end gun violence. Proposed legislation will:

Require a criminal background check for every US gun sold
Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
Make gun trafficking a federal crime, including real penalties for “straw purchasers”

Some people feel this doesn't go far enough. Fareed Zakaria references Australia's 1996 ban on automatic and semiautomatic weapons; gun related homicides dropped by 59%.
