Building a Better Future: Critical Questions on Transportation
This is one of eight sets of questions to consider when envisioning a city that can win the climate fight. Read the introduction, and take a look at an overview of all eight.
Where do you live? How is your city laid out, and how is it growing (or shrinking)? How many people live in neighborhoods where a main street of shops is within a 10 minute walk? Are the existing neighborhoods growing more compact, or is your city sprawling outward? Is mass transit readily available, or is it too difficult for most people to use in your community? How much do people drive where you live (the technical measurement is "vehicle-miles-traveled per capita"), and how do their driving habits compare with cities that are moving away from auto-dependence, like Copenhagen, Denmark, or Vancouver, Canada?
