Care to Air Design Challenge
The Care to Air Design Challenge seeks the world’s most innovative, covetable, and sustainable air-drying solution for clothing. At stake? $10,000 in prize money from Levi Strauss & Co.
The team at Pura Vida, combined work of three engineers, entrepreneurs, and design geeks based in New York City, have created Aerospin, a collapsible air drying device powered by ambient air and sunlight.
Aesthetics: The Aerospin has a simple, modern design and comes in multiple colors. The mesh housing maintains a consistent exterior that hides the clothing from view. Those items that can be seen (through the entry or exit) are partially hidden by the aerofoil and fins. In addition, the clothing items are symmetrically spaced on the sliding rails for easy loading and unloading.
Scalability: The Aerospin is highly scalable, as it is both cost effective and can be used in many different environments, both outdoors and indoors. Made of few parts, it is a simple device that is easy to manufacture and for which anyone can assemble.
Environmental Sustainability: The Aerospin is made entirely of natural fibers including sea grass, bamboo, jute, and cotton. It is powered by ambient air and sunlight. Manufacturing is also conducted in a sustainable manner, minimizing the Aerospin’s carbon footprint.
Ingenuity: The Aerospin has five unique design elements that enhance the drying process by orienting the device in the direction of external airflow, pushing dry air up and humid air out, expanding and accelerating the air as it passes through, and trapping solar energy.
Proceeds from their potentially winning prize will help save victims of human trafficking at The Blind Project.
