Day 12: Reconsider Your Center
When 03/12/2013
It's officially been over 6 months since I've come back from spending my summer volunteering in the back country of New Zealand and the funny thing is, while I still don't feel at home in the sense that Canada is my home, I finally feel that I've found my place. Growing up in Canada with immigrant parents from two different countries, I wasn't raised within a single cultural sphere. It was amazing, but at the same time, I was jealous of people who felt such pride in being just one 'thing'; they had their identity set and it seemed so easy. It was traveling by myself this summer that finally allowed me the opportunity to understand what it feels like to have a coherent identity that is associated with one thing. And, while my version of identity may be rooted in a far larger concept than usual, it is the fact that I now see myself as a citizen of humanity that allows me to view my home as anywhere in the world & amidst all of my fellow global citizens.
