Today my roommates said that it's easier to pick on the negative aspects of most things. At first I was taken aback... are we really that petty? But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Not from the standpoint of humans being innately negative, but based on the idea that when we feel an emotion more strongly, the more likely we are to be able to recall & pinpoint the moment that we felt it. Take going out for instance. The company is wonderful, the atmosphere great but (& I've had this one happen before) the waiter accidentally spills your drink on you... In the moment, not so fun and, unfortunately... probably the most memorable thing about that dinner. In hindsight though, there's no way that moment was anywhere near the most important thing that happened that night. So even if you need to consciously make an effort at first, when something bad pops up, try thinking about something good that's happened. I can almost guarantee the positives will outweigh the negatives!
