Farmers turn to renewables as crop yields falter

Farmers producing their own wind energy earned up to £50,000 last year while smaller installations of 20kW attracted payments of around £12,000 a year. The National Farmers Union estimates that during 2012 one in five of its members produced clean electricity from the sun and wind, offering a vital revenue stream during what was the worst year for crop yields and productivity since the 1980s.
