Greg Kaufmann, contributor at The Nation, has been covering poverty through his column "This Week in Poverty." Over 46 million Americans live "below the poverty line on less than $18,000 annually for a family of three." An additional 106 million live "on less than $36,000 a year, struggling to afford the basics like food, housing, healthcare, and education."
The statistics are daunting, but, says Kaufman, "it’s simply not true that 'we don’t know what to do about poverty.' " To that end he's compiled a handy list of "good groups that can help you get informed and get involved in the fight against poverty." Kaufman says that following "a half dozen of them," would help you "know more about poverty than most Members of Congress."
