GOOD 100: Meet Rob Spiro, Making Local Food More Accessible

Rob Spiro is CEO and co-founder of San Francisco-based start-up Good Eggs, which provides much-needed technological support for the local food

Rob Spiro is CEO and co-founder of San Francisco-based start-up Good Eggs, which provides much-needed technological support for the local food community. Before co-founding Aardvark, a question-and-answer tech company, and working as a project manager for Google+, Spiro helped raise chickens and grow tomatoes on a farm in upstate New York.

Fusing Spiro’s varied interests, Good Eggs is a hybrid between a tech start-up and a food company that acts as an online storefront to facilitate transactions for local food vendors, and as a source of information from famous food gurus like Alice Waters. Consumers can order online from the best local farmers and food makers, which their groceries are then picked and prepped to order. Good Eggs aggregates, packs, and delivers the goods right to the customer’s door, or they can be picked up at one of many local hubs.

“We've spent the better part of 2012 developing the Good Eggs model in the Bay Area,” Spiro says. “In 2013 we'll be rolling Good Eggs out to cities across the country.”

To get the ball rolling, Spiro will connect with the best farmers, food makers, and local distribution companies in cities and regions around the country, making Good Eggs available to the entire Bay Area come spring.

“Shortly thereafter we'll start working with folks in New York, LA, and a few other cities to make Good Eggs available to those local food systems,” Spiro says.
