Help Save & Restore Historic Charles Sumner Post #25 in Chestertown, MD

The Charles Sumner Post was built in 1908 by African American veterans of the Civil War. It served as the center of African-American community life for 60 years. It is the only building of its kind in the state of Maryland, and one of only 2 such monuments left standing in the US. The historic building will become a world-class museum about the nation’s Civil War and the story of African Americans’ involvement in it. The building will also include an event space for all to enjoy.
