India's Barefoot College: Rural Skillsharing for Self-Sufficiency
Begun in 1972 on the 45-acre grounds of an old tuberculosis sanatorium in Tilonia, India, Bunker Roy's Barefoot College has trained more than 200 semi-literate local people in solar engineering for village energy sources, allowing 500,000 of their neighbors access to safe drinking water. That's just one success story from this remarkable model for rural higher education.
