Pet ownership in America is on the rise, according to a national survey conducted earlier this year. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of U.S. households with at least one pet increased 2.1 percent, to a total of 72.9 million homes. And despite the recession, Americans are spending more on their beloved pets—shelling out for everything from medication to holiday gifts—than ever before.
