#StarringJohnCho Aims To Stop Hollywood’s Whitewashing Of Asian Characters

Paint the mental picture of a character named Motoko Kusaguri in your mind. Does she look like Scarlett Johansson? Probably not. How about Alison Ng? She looks like Emma Stone, right? Nope. The whitewashing of Asian characters in Hollywood films is getting so out of hand that Marvel Studios recently cast Tilda Swinton to play a traditionally Tibetan character whose origin has been changed to Celtic. So in attempt to end offensive and unnecessary yellowface casting, the #StarringJohnCho movement has been has been trending on social media.


Korean-American actor John Cho would make a fine leading man, he’s done comedy (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, American Pie), action (Star Trek), and drama (Sleepy Hollow). So in order to get the idea through Hollywood’s thick skull, people have been creating posters of popular films where the A-list actors have been replaced by Cho.
