In March, celebrated open source software developer Bassel Khartabil was detained in a wave of arrests in Damascus. Since then, the Syrian government has held Bassel without an official explanation for his detention. Amnesty International recently released a report saying "There are fears for his safety as a local source claims he has been tortured and otherwise ill-treated." (See http://is.gd/MlIwkG.)
