Make Your Own Meals: Get Juiced #30DaysofGOOD
Things are easier said than done, or so the old adage goes, and we couldn't agree more. That's why we do The GOOD 30-Day Challenge (#30DaysofGOOD), a monthly attempt to live better. Our challenge for June? Make your own meals.
Today's challenge is to buy an assortment of fresh fruits and put them to good use: Drink them.
The only way to make great juice is from fresh fruit, so start by hitting up a quality produce store or a farmers market. Pick five fruits—a couple that are in season right now (for instance, cherries and apricots), some kind of standby (like oranges), and a couple that are a bit unusual (look for pomelos, which taste like sweet grapefruit). Make sure to get a variety of colors (blood oranges have a particularly vivid hue), and a balance of sour (lemons, ruby red grapefruit) and sweet (tangelos, mandarins).
Once you've lugged your bounty home, pick two or three fruits and make a well-balanced juice. For citrus, squeeze by hand or use a squeeze juicer. For stone fruits, mash, puree in a blender, and strain.
Play around with flavors. Lately I've been digging a 2:1 mix of pink grapefruit and blood oranges. The result tastes as vibrant as it looks, thanks to the raspberry hints in blood oranges and the pucker of the grapefruit. I cut it with a bit of sparkling water and drink it for a healthful breakfast. It also works as the basis for a great cocktail: Add a teaspoon of lavender simple syrup (you can make your own) and a floral-tasting gin, and you’ve got yourself a summer afternoon in a bottle.
