Map of Responses to the Oil Disaster
You can access the map here: http://oilspill.labucketbrigade.org/.
For those of you living in the Gulf Coast area, please participate by submitting reports on your experience with the spill. In the New Orleans area, residents have submitted over 90 reports about odor. Maybe we just have weak stomachs here or something - but normally bad smells mean there is something bad for you in the air. (Which means we should also take additional action by getting in touch with the Bucket Brigade, and getting our own buckets to take air samples for evaluation.)
For those of you not living in the area, the map still shows the response by real people in this community. Ultimately, the gathering of this data will be useful for future legislation and mitigation of such events.
The tool also shows events occurring, not just personal experiences. Meetings and protests are listed. There are plans in the works to make the submission procession and information gathered more accessible to people without internet at home. As was said this evening - this tool is something that we did not have when the oil crisis occurred in Alaska, and we should take advantage of it.
There are obviously many other ways to take action, and I encourage everyone to look into the opportunity most appropriate to them. Thanks so much to all those who take the time to care about this crisis, and for taking the time to read about it, talk about it, and respond to it.
