Meet Literary Jukebox, a Daily Dose of Art Discovery
Culture curator Maria Popova calls it "an experiment in cross-pollinating the arts."
She's just launched a website, Literary Jukebox, that doles out a single, curated song each day, paired with a quote from a favorite book of hers. She writes in a blog post on her website Brainpickings: "As a lover of both literature and music, I frequently find myself immersed in a passage, with a conceptually related song beginning to play in my mind’s ear." Now she's sharing that list of micro-literary soundtracks in a minimalist one-purpose website.
You can play the song, read the quote, then ponder the pairing as you get on with your day. It's as simple and focused as a lightweight app, but the point is cultural enrichment not remembering the milk.
"Sometimes, the connections will be fairly obvious. Other times, they might be more esoteric and require some reflection," she writes.
Today's track is I Am the Boy for You by Astrid Williamson paired with a passage from The Letters of Virginia Woolf where the author implores her beloved Vita Sackville-West to "throw off your man" and run to Woolf's arms.
We'll leave it to you to listen to the track and contemplate the connection further. And if you like either, you can buy the book or the song through a link on the site.
