I've been working on the big ideas of Neighborday, what it means and what it's for. Here in Cambridge, my home of 12 years, my friends have been telling me this past week that Neighborday will mean something different to them than they had expected. They’ve had impromptu news-watching parties with hallmates, commiserated about lockdowns in the neighborhood watering hole, invited evacuated neighbors over when they didn’t have anywhere else to go. Whether they’re feeling sad or scared or numb or angry, the emotions of this week have been something they’ve all lived with, together, in the places they share.
This week has reminded us that neighboring is about resilience. It’s about being strong together, being there for each other. To my neighbors in Boston, and to anyone whose neighborhood has had their share of heartache this year, from the Rockaways to West, Texas, find a way to neighbor that feels right to you.
