Norah Jones Makes Haunting Tribute To Chris Cornell

By singing a stripped-down crowd pleaser

While playing a show at the Fox Theatre in Detroit on Tuesday night, singer-songwriter Norah Jones took a moment to a pay a hauntingly beautiful tribute to the late Chris Cornell. The tribute comes less than a week after Cornell’s death following Soundgarden’s last performance, which also happened to take place at the Fox Theatre. For her tribute, Jones chose to cover Soundgarden’s iconic 1994 hit, “Black Hole Sun.”

Stripped of every instrument except the piano, Jones’ solo rendition managed to highlight both her velvety vocals and Cornell’s legendary songwriting skills. In her cover, Jones provided an intimate moment for her fans to reflect, and luckily for us, one fan caught the whole performance on video, which you can watch above.

As the first show to take place at the Fox Theatre since Cornell’s shocking death, Jones rose to the occasion to give fans a memory they’ll never forget. While acknowledging Cornell’s contributions to music history, Jones also signaled a new phase of her own by returning to stripped-down instrumentals and a focus on her voice. As she told Cleveland.com about the trajectory of her career and a revival of her bluesy roots, “This tour's been very fun. I just have so much more songs than I ever did. And it's been even fun playing songs from my first album for the first time in a while.”
