Like Brooklyn itself, the home has changed a lot since the mid-’80s
Barack Obama was in Brooklyn before it was cool to be in Brooklyn. About 25 years before, it would seem. After graduating from Columbia University in 1983, the future president, with a pre-Michelle girlfriend, lived on the fourth floor of a 1902 townhouse located at 640 Second St. in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Since his residence, the townhouse has been converted back into a single-family home boasting five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and its own yard. It’s no doubt looking a lot more posh than it was during the former president’s postcollege days.

Brooklyn may not have been the most congenial place in the mid-1980s, but nowadays this is a luxury residence in an increasingly luxurious neighborhood. There’s little doubt that the property has been improved concurrent with the neighborhood’s rapid gentrification, but it will be interesting to see if the property benefits from an inflated sales price for housing a 20-something college grad who would go on to the White House.
Even if its history doesn’t boost the $4.3 million asking price, it will make for a fun story for the lucky and affluent buyers-to-be.
If you’re a fan of the president, but have trouble stomaching the multi-million ask, you can always look to his Harlem apartment during his junior year at Columbia. The 142 West 109th St. pad only ran him $180 per month back in his day, and it was rented out in 2014 for a not-unreasonable $2,300 monthly. It may not be luxury (or even nice), but it’s every bit as presidential in the literal sense of the word.
