Photos: What it Looks Like to Actually Live off the Grid

Photographer Lucas Foglia, was raised in the radical back-to-the-land movement of the 60s/70s, which was built upon the ideals of self-sufficiency and self-dependency. You heated your house with a wood fire, hunted your own food, and children were born at home. It was a “return to nature.” As an adult, Foglia revisited these communities where people are living off the grid. At times they seem so at odds with our contemporary, consumerist lives, the photos almost feel staged.
