Ramblings (and on and on...)
I lead a student group on my campus. It started about a year ago with 10 people meeting in a room with a few ideas. Let me just preface this whole story by opening your eyes to my school with two words; small and apathetic. Ok, so now you have the context for a small group called People Helping People being formed. After a handful of initial projects and gaining momentum, PHP is now the largest group on campus (hold on) but one of the most effective groups promoting a range of ideas and volunteer opportunities. We have about 50 people at each meeting and a total of 80 students who are regularly involved.
Because of the purpose behind the group. "PHP is a group of student leaders dedicated to mobilizing the student body into action through various opportunities and initiatves that revolve around the theme of "meaningful service"'. We don't just volunteer. We have a voice, and we make it heard.
Here's the thing; people want to be part of something like that! Students and young professionals and adults who are less than enthralled with their life and what's going on around them are searching for something. A movement. But not just any movement. A movement that isn't a movement for the sake of being a movement. A revolution of sorts, that addresses the very soul of a person. A community that works from the inside out- from their hearts to their hands. From their minds to their projects. From person to person. That is why People Helping People has been successful (along with dedicated leaders, new business structures, and amazing members).
The point is that people are now looking for more. That's why this website and GOOD Magazine even exist. People want to be part of something. So...be part of something. But do it for the right reasons. Start a revolution of creating change because people need hope, leadership, depth, truth, and love.
Oh boy, ramblings...what can I say? You never know where you're going to end up...
