Working with FavelaNews in Recife, Brazil, we have found that one of the reasons that there was so much violence in the favelas where we were working, is that the only thing that people knew about their neighbors in rival communities was what they saw on the local news. And that news was always terrible, violent, negative. In the end, there was no trust, and when any kind of conflict emerged, violence came out of it. By showing the good part of another community, we built up the basis of trust that makes society work.
So try this: Use your cell phone or camera to film something great about your community that not many people know. Post the video on YouTube, and then let your friends know, then link to it from the comments section below. Maybe even tweet it to @favelanews" so we can know what you're doing.
