This week, during his travels in Southeast Asia, President Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Burma, also known as Myanmar.

Escalating violence in western Burma, where ethnic minorities have been attacked, displaced, and persecuted by civilians and state forces, continues to undermine recent democratic progress in the country.
