Showing Whipping Scars from Working in Quarries, a Father Vows to Never Send His Children Away
One father, who was trafficked for work as a young boy, vows to never send his children away to work. Another, whose experiences of abuse still haunt him to this day, has just sent away two of his children. "It's a last recourse, a survival strategy," says Jean Lokenga, UNICEF's chief child protection specialist in Benin. With almost 1/2 the country's population falling below the poverty line in the past decade, parents who started work in their 20s are sending children away at half that age.
