Social math helps people put mind-bogglingly large numbers into personal perspective that they can relate to and comprehend. When we relate numbers that otherwise lack context or meaning to everyday social experiences, the math begins to matter.
One of the best examples of social math I've seen in months came out just last week. It was Steven Brill's piece in Time on how out-of-control health care costs are killing us and our country.
