Today is the day devoted to inspiring people to stop and think about their hurtful and disparaging use of the word "retard."
Most people will dismiss the idea of this word as "hate speech," but truly, why should "most people" be the authorities on the subject? Because hate speech is precisely what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual disabilities, as well as many of their families and friends. Using "retard" as a term of derision is just as offensively hurtful as any other group-specific slur. So join me in taking the pledge to end it, and spread the word about ending the word--there is a menagerie of ways you can help, if you just click through to the campaign site!
