Student Researchers Find Bike Lane Increases Bicycling in New Orleans Neighborhood
The city of New Orleans has added more than 37 miles of bike lanes on 16 streets since 2008. One newly added lane was observed by Tulane Public Health students and was found to cause a 110% increase in ridership in the neighborhood.
“This study shows that bike lanes promote physical activity among all ages and are a cost-effective tool for planners, engineers and government officials” - Kathryn Parker, assistant director of Tulane’s Prevention Research Center, leader of the study.
