Imagine moving to a new home. The packing. The unpacking. The mountains of boxes.
Now picture moving to a new home with just a few belongings stuffed in a single trash bag. It’s hard to imagine, but for thousands of foster kids across the country, it’s a reality. Many children come into foster care without basic comfort items like a stuffed animal, a toothbrush, or even a backpack to carry their things.
For example, Monterey County has a very high rate of foster care placements in California. Over 400 foster kids currently reside in Monterey County many of them will be placed in three or more homes in a single year. Often they move with their few possessions stuffed in a garbage bag.
To commemorate National Foster Care Month in May you can host a backpack and personal hygiene drive to benefit Peacock Acres or your local foster youth organization and provide a sense of dignity and security to youth currently in foster care.
