Here’s the gist of a conversation I endured the other day:
Administrator: We need you to really push to raise ACT scores so we look good in the public’s eye.
Us: Why are we (Junior English teachers) working harder than the students when it comes to ACT prep?
Admin: I know it’s frustrating, but what carrots can we dangle to get the students to show up for more ACT tutoring?
Me: I don’t like carrots.
Admin: Please play the game, Mr. Barnwell.
