The One Nice Thing Clinton And Trump Said About Each Other

The only bright spot during the nastiest debate in American history

This was the nastiest debate in American history. It opened with Donald Trump having to deny being guilty of sexual assault, included Trump saying he’d appoint a special prosecutor and send Clinton to “jail” and saw Clinton say Trump was unqualified to be president, unlike any other Republican nominee ever.

Things were so heated that the final question of the night came from an audience member who begged the candidates to say one nice thing about each other. Given the chance to go first, Trump hesitated. Taking the lead, Clinton gave a half-hearted compliment to Trump, saying:

“I respect his children. His children are incredibly able and that says a lot about Donald.” She then immediately pivoted into a minute-long attack on Trump’s policies.

When it was finally his turn, Trump opened by criticizing Clinton’s policies, before giving what even his critics conceded was a pretty decent compliment, saying:

“She doesn’t quit, she doesn’t give up. I respect that. She’s a fighter … I consider that to be a very good trait.”
