Tutoring English language learners

The English as a Second Language program of Boise, Idaho is seeking volunteers to tutor. Dear Prospective Volunteer:For the last fiscal year, our program enrolled 900 students from over 30 language groups. Our program is free and open to refugees and immigrants. The student population ranges widely in language proficiency and academic background. We hold classes two times a week for two-hour or 2.5-hour sessions: mornings, afternoons and evenings. The majority of students are only able to study English in class for 4 or 5 hours a week. Additional time working with volunteers is greatly appreciated. For our volunteer program, we coordinate and connect volunteers and students for one-on-one or small group tutoring, once or twice a week for an hour or two. The sessions are arranged at the convenience of the volunteers and students. Tutors work to help students achieve their language and academic goals with suggested materialsIn addition, we have a new offering for volunteers and English language students. Due to shrinking financial funding sources, we have to limit our class enrollment. We are excited though to offer a new program to participants who would not be able to attend classes or who would like more opportunity to practice speaking English. The activity is called, "Talk Time". It entails a commitment of at least 2 hours a week. Talk Time is offered twice a week, Mondays at 1:00-2:30 pm and Fridays from 6:00–7:30 pm. Participants join volunteer facilitators in discussions on given topics, games, and communicative activities. Instruction is kept to a minimum; it is a time to facilitate speaking and listening in a relaxed atmosphere. The requirements for volunteers are openness to other cultures, patience, and a sense of humor. A flexible commitment of 4-6 months is requested from all volunteers. If you are interested in either option, please contact me to set up an interview. I am in the office mornings and afternoons on Monday and Wednesdays and by appointment. Thank you for your interest and I look forward to working with you in the future.
