United Nations Calls for Ban of Female Genital Mutilation

The United Nations human rights committee adopted a resolution calling on its 193 member states to condemn female genital mutilation. The resolution recommends legislation prohibiting the practice, as well as education campaigns to teach people how to eliminate the practice in their communities. "FGM is an indictment of us all – that a girl or young woman can be held down and mutilated is a violation of her human rights," said Jose Luis Diaz, Amnesty International's U.N. representative.
