Will Los Angeles' Bold Move to Make the Arts a 'Core Subject' in Schools Spread?

Last week Los Angeles' school board passed a resolution to make the arts a "core subject"-- one considered essential to education. The resolution puts the arts on par with math and English language arts, which will keep it from being completely gutted if budget cuts happen. Now arts education activists in New York City want to see the same "core" designation come to schools there. However, the two cities school districts operate differently, so it's not a cut and paste situation.
