My family loves traveling. Not vacationing, but traveling: trying to cover as much distance and see as many things as possible before exhaustion and darkness force us to stop and rest. When my sister and I reached an age of suitable patience for long car rides, every summer became focused around "The Trip": My parents would pack our brown 1983 Volvo 240 DL and we would set off across California and beyond. We had no iPods, no Gameboys: just thousands of miles of interstate and state highway; deserts, beaches, and forests.

After a thousand miles spent gazing out the window, a brain becomes a sponge for visual landmarks. On trips to Los Angeles, I'd recognize our imminent arrival by the giant Western Exterminator billboard in Silver Lake; if we were headed to LAX, I'd start gathering my things and putting my sneakers on as soon as Randy's Donuts was in sight.

In 1986 we went to Wisconsin, staying at my great-grandmother's tiny cabin by a lake. I remember the general mood of the place—birch trees and loons crying at sunset, the cedar scented knickknacks at the local souvenir shop. My most specific memory, however, is of a 50 foot tall Paul Bunyan (accompanied by an equally large Babe the Blue Ox) outside Paul Bunyan's Cook Shanty in Minocqua. The statue (it might have been just a flat billboard) was nowhere near 50 feet tall, maybe 15 feet at most. But my memory is of finishing my pancakes and walking into the parking lot to behold Paul and Babe, lit from below with spotlights, stretching infinitely skywards into the Midwestern summer night. Being five years old, I doubt the Taj Mahal could have impressed me more.

Today, I cannot pass a Muffler Man, Sinclair dinosaur, or giant doughnut without the urge to stop and take a picture. They seem lonely out there, fiberglass antiques ignored by a generation of kids with headrest DVD players and iPod Touches. Maybe the decline and disappearance of roadside kitsch is for the best—after all, the sculptures are a goofy reminder of America's painful reliance on fossil fuels to move us from place to place.

No woman commands storms with her mind. No one spins webs from his wrists or flies across continents or shoots lasers from his eyes. But that doesn't mean there aren't super heroes among us. Inside every human is the capacity to do something kind, brave, and strong for our fellow humans; some among us simply choose to do so in secret. In the spirit of the heroes who fill the pages of comic books, an unlikely assortment of men and women have been donning masks and costumes, and venturing into their respective neighborhoods to feed the hungry, comfort the sick, and protect the innocent.

The Real Life Super Hero Project is the photographer Peter Tangen's attempt to document the work of these loosely affiliated individuals; it's also a gallery exhibit designed to raise money for the causes with which these men and women are affiliated. Highlighting the people who do good under the secrecy of masks with no hope for personal gain, the Real Life Super Hero Project is a call for all of us to engage with and help those around us.

We got out of the city and drove up to Point Reyes through amazing redwood groves, met old friends for lunch, and picked sun-ripened blackberries on the side of the road before heading back to San Francisco, where it was 30 degrees cooler! I'm far happier celebrating the everyday -- less expectation of The EVENT leads to more room for surprise & discovery. Clearly, the two small things (Emilia, age 4, and her trusty Cairn terrier, Wally) in our family had a great day.

Sam Diephuis wants to document their work. Originally from San Francisco, the photographer makes his home in the charming variegation of Venice Beach, where the food vendors pictured here work. Using what limited Spanish he possesses, he has met scores of workers—and enjoyed all varieties of fruit and tacos—between Venice and East L.A.

Picture Show: Everyday South Africans and Their Bikes

Stan Engelbrecht and Nic Grobler's Bicycle Portraits is an ongoing project to photograph everyday South Africans and their bikes. Earlier this year, they used a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise $15,000, with which they are traveling around South Africa to meet fellow cyclists and tell their stories. Those pictures and stories will fill the pages of a stunning photographic book.

"There is an unspoken bond between two cyclist who pass each other on the road," says Engelbrecht. "If you choose to ride a bicycle instead of driving a car or using public transport in South Africa, you make a conscious decision to live outside the norm and put yourself in physical danger of getting robbed or mauled by a taxi every day. These fellow South African commuters are my people, and the Bicycle Portraits project is their voice. We get each other."

"I'm experiencing the project much like a ride on a bicycle, it is a journey," adds Grobler. "We see and learn things along the way.

We make new friends and we have fun while doing it. To me the project is about people. It is not just about those we are photographing, but also about the audience of the project.

In June, we asked you to help us create a Picture Show about water. The response was overwhelming and your submissions made us giddy: we received photos of all kinds of water from oceans to swimming pools snapped from around the world. Unfortunately, we are unable to feature all of them, but we did our best to choose a range of images that capture water from a unique perspective. Below is a collaborative Picture Show, made by the GOOD community.

Now it's up to you to choose a winner. Vote on your favorite submission by commenting on this post. We'll announce the winning entry on July 26. The winner will receive a GOOD t-shirt and a year's free subscription to our magazine.

	Vote away!

A group of paddle boarders paddle near Clearwater Beach, Florida. When the tides are high, the creatures living in the tidelands have the freedom to travel where they please, but when the tides recede, they must find a sanctuary where water remains until the tides return. Creatures trapped between the tide pools during low tide might not survive until the tide rises again, and the creatures that stay in the tide pools can travel nowhere until the tides rise.

With some area waters closed to fishing during the season in which fishermen make 75 percent of their annual income, locals like Ricky Robin—a seventh generation shrimper Koehler began photographing in 2008—are lucky to find work cleaning the oil. Recently, Koehler visited Robin and his family, and documented Robin's work booming the barrier islands near the BP site at Hopedale, Louisiana. With little more than bandanas to protect themselves from the floating toxins, Robin and other men now load their boats with booms instead of shrimp, and incidents of fishermen getting sick are becoming common.

"To me this project has been about finding American heroes," says Koehler, who, alongside Robin in a helicopter flight over the Gulf, captured images that convey the staggering magnitude of the problem. "These people have a strong oral tradition, and they know their heritage.
